extra-sharp pencil skirts from our panelists

Today marks the culmination of the Extra-Sharp Pencil Skirt sew-along! We're excited to showcase the finished creations from our talented panelists. If you recall, our participants shared their initial ideas and plans for this project. You can revisit those details here. Now, they've successfully completed their skirts, and today is your chance to see the final results. Not only will you get to admire their work, but you'll also gain insights into how the skirt looks and fits. A big thank you goes out to everyone who has participated so far. There's still plenty of time to join in and submit your own Extra-Sharp Pencil Skirt for the contest. The deadline is Monday, July 2nd, at 11:59 PM ET. Don't miss this opportunity to share your creativity and compete for recognition! Let's dive into what our panelists have been working on. **Camelia** Camelia crafted her skirt in size 4, making only minor adjustments of 0.6 cm along the front panel seams based on her muslin test. She found it refreshing to sew something that required minimal alterations. To save time, she hemmed the skirt with her sewing machine, which she felt worked well for a casual skirt. This was her first experience adding a vent, but she discovered it wasn't as daunting as she anticipated. She even went on to create a second version in denim, which took longer to topstitch but was equally rewarding. Camelia is thrilled with both versions of her skirt. ![Liesl + Co. It's Darcy here, and I'm excited to share my take on the Extra Sharp Pencil Skirt. I thoroughly enjoyed the sewing process! The fit was straightforward thanks to the side panels, allowing me to easily tailor the skirt to my liking. I opted for a size 8, slightly cinching the waist during construction. The most challenging part was inserting the zipper, but the instructions provided clear guidance. Once I tackled that step, the remainder of the skirt came together smoothly. With my functional jean-style skirt complete, I'm now considering experimenting with bold patterns for special occasions like date nights and weddings. ![Liesl + Co. I hope you enjoyed following along with the sew-along. The instructions were crystal-clear and incredibly helpful. I was initially concerned about the fit since I have a rectangular shape (minimal hip-to-waist difference), but after a basted fitting, I was pleasantly surprised by how well it fit straight out of the envelope. The ability to make quick adjustments post-zipper insertion was a game-changer for me. I adore the security of the twill tape around the waist and the overall clean finishes. To my surprise, this pencil skirt fits seamlessly into my everyday life as a stay-at-home mom. Having a versatile wardrobe staple like this is a dream come true—it can effortlessly transition from casual to formal settings. ![Liesl + Co. Thanks to the precise instructions, my invisible zipper installation was flawless on the first attempt. The waistband came together without a hitch, as the directions included detailed steps for catching the zipper tape in the seams. I made a few subtle modifications to the pattern. I added black mini-piping (much narrower than store-bought piping) to each of the four vertical seams to enhance the vertical lines. You can find a tutorial on how to create your own here. To maintain the focus on the vertical lines, I stitched the waistband facing from the right side of the skirt, securing it without adding visible stitching on the front. Additionally, I had fun personalizing the inside of my skirt by choosing red hem tape instead of the usual white. While I initially hesitated about making this skirt due to past experiences with ill-fitting pencil skirts, I'm thrilled I gave it a try. The fit is superb thanks to the four seams, and I'm already planning to transform a black wool piece in my stash into another Extra-Sharp Pencil Skirt for winter. ![Liesl + Co. Here's her story: I decided to sew my pencil skirt from a luxurious gold brocade. Given that Madrid tends to dress more formally than New York, I knew this skirt would be a versatile addition to my wardrobe, suitable for both formal events and casual outings. These photos inspired me: ![Inspiration](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/a879d207d2cbb1f4c9a86f763f964dc9.jpg) I adore the pairing of a boxy top with a longer pencil skirt, as well as styling it with cozy sweaters or a simple white button-down shirt. For me, this skirt is all about texture and how it complements other textures. I plan to pair it with my old denim shirt, T-shirts, and various tops. Given the bulkiness of the brocade, I used leftover unbleached linen for the facings. I also reinforced the fabric with woven fusible interfacing to provide additional structure and protect the delicate gold threads. I wasn't entirely confident the brocade threads would withstand friction, and I wanted to ensure comfort as well. Additionally, I bound the seam allowances with leftover washed silk to improve comfort and enhance the interior appearance. Here are the fabrics I selected, which I showcased on Instagram a few weeks ago: ![Fabric Selection](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/29bc2c5604d74c451fcb1afd6b0fa925.jpg) Take a look inside the skirt, featuring woven interfacing and Hong Kong seam finishes. (I love Hong Kong seams because they're quick and aesthetically pleasing!) ![Interior Details](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/676ce63e3d99dbc60d3f60a451e3fca1.jpg) After cutting the brocade, I block-fused the woven interfacing to the back of each piece. Alternatively, you could baste a second fabric to the first for added structure—a technique known as underlining. This method adds body and stability to delicate fabrics. Apart from these adjustments, I followed the pattern instructions as written. I should mention that I've gained some weight recently (due to stress), so I sewed the skirt in my standard size and will modify it later if necessary. It fits snugly here, but that's one of the benefits of this pattern—it's easy to tweak as needed. I can't wait to wear this skirt! I might even bring it along on our summer trip to the U.S., where we have some exciting events planned. For these photos, I paired it with a stiff waffle-weave Maritime Knit Top I made several years ago. ![Final Look](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/9e002b533e1454e61016acb62846f6f3.jpg) *** Wasn't that impressive?
