The first large-scale excavation of prehistoric jade in Shaanxi

After three years of archaeological excavations, a few days ago, Shaanxi archaeologists completed the archaeological excavation of the east gate of the Shijie site in Shenmu County, Yulin City. The jade found in the site proved to belong to the late Longshan to the Xia Dynasty. This is the first time that Shaanxi has unearthed a large number of prehistoric jade artifacts.

The total area of ​​the Shiji site is more than 4 million square meters. It is more than 4,000 years ago. It is the largest prehistoric site discovered in China. It consists of three parts: the outer city, the inner city and the imperial city platform. Since 2011, archaeologists have excavated the area of ​​the East Gate site of the Outer City. Unearthed jade, stoneware, murals, pottery and other relics, more than 20 pieces of jade unearthed, most of which are buried in the wall.

Sun Zhouyong, the deputy director of the Provincial Academy of Archaeology, is the archaeological leader of the Shiji site. "Jade itself is the evil spirit in the East Asian concept. It uses jade in the construction process to build a spirit for the residence or ruler of Shijie. The barrier, not only to defend against foreign enemies, but also to resist natural disasters. This discovery for the first time from an archaeological point of view proves that these jade articles may belong to the physical data between the late Longshan and the Xia Dynasty."

The excavation also clarified the structure of the Dongmen site and found a very complex urban defense facility consisting of north and south piers, inner and outer towers, horses, and turrets.
