Welcome Ren, the incredibly talented creator behind The Inspired Wren, to our blog today! Over a year ago, we showcased her ingenious project: an inkjet-printed lazy days skirt. She's here now to talk about her beloved Oliver + S pattern. Thank you so much for joining us, Ren! Hello, Oliver + S enthusiasts! I’m Ren Murphy from The Inspired Wren, where I share inspiring sewing, crochet, and crafting ideas. I’m thrilled to be here today to introduce you to my absolute favorite Oliver + S pattern—the Jump Rope Dress. My very first Jump Rope Dress. My very first ever sewn placket! Corduroy and quilting cotton, 2013. Let me start by saying it wasn't easy for me to pick a favorite pattern. Each time I've read one of these posts in the past, I'd play a mental game to guess which pattern I'd write about—and inevitably, it ended up being the last one I sewed. From my very first pattern, Puppet Show Shorts and Tunic, to the After School Shirt and Pants, to the Family Reunion Dress, to the Ruffled Halter, and beyond, I’ve never sewn an Oliver + S pattern just once. I always sew multiples of each piece. There’s only one exception: my model (and daughter), The Peanut, refuses to wear the Lunch Box Culottes, which I absolutely adore. She can’t decide whether they’re skirts or pants, so they’ve been a no-go for her. I'm still hopeful she'll warm up to them since they're so adorable, and I have the larger sizes for her. But overall, I'm okay with one miss out of over thirty-five sews! Christmas perfection! Taffeta tartan, 2013. Even though I love all Oliver + S patterns, I’ve come to realize that my current, and long-standing, favorite is the Jump Rope Dress. It’s just got so much going for it. The two views can make dresses that look completely different at first glance; it’s one of those patterns that gives you multiple staples for your child to wear throughout the year. My favorite part? How accomplished I feel every time I finish one of those plackets. Honestly, all I do is follow the instructions! Lovely Jump Rope plackets, including an Easter dress work-in-progress. So far, I’ve made the Jump Rope Dress in corduroy, taffeta, poly-blends, and cotton, and I’m not done yet. The fact that I keep coming back to it proves how much I adore this pattern. Right now, I’m working on an Easter dress version (another View A—I think the full skirt screams “holiday†to me). I had to step away to write this post, but you can catch a sneak peek in the placket-love collage above. Lately, my go-to version has been View B with View A sleeves, minus the pockets, plus a shirttail hem and a thin-elastic gathered waist—a perfect little shirt dress. I’ve already sewn two of these! (For more details, check out my post on The Inspired Wren.) In a breezy cotton or a blend, it’s ideal for Spring and Fall. Darling B&W gingham in a poly-blend shirting. Sewn September 2015, worn, loved, and finally photographed February 2016. I also enjoy experimenting with contrasting fabrics on the plackets and sleeve tabs/cuffs. Turns out, I have a soft spot for orange. (Fun fact: I have an orange front door, carry a large orange tote, and wear a decade-old orange blazer. Only recently did I realize it’s my favorite color. Sometimes I overlook the obvious!) I always love chambray with pops of color, here paired with quilting cotton, 2016. Now, I need to get back to finishing my Easter version. Clearly, I have a weakness for a good holiday plaid. This time, with bunny buttons! Thank you so much for having me today, Liesl, Todd, and the entire Oliver + S team. It’s been an honor.
