According to the latest report from Ningbo Customs, the city’s total foreign trade import and export volume reached $82.904 billion last year, marking a historic milestone as it entered the top ten in the nation for the first time. A significant portion of the city's population—about one-third—is directly or indirectly involved in foreign trade. The scale of Ningbo’s foreign trade has now reached levels comparable to those of developed nations like Japan and Italy.
In the Ministry of Commerce’s ranking of 36 provinces, municipalities, and cities under separate planning, Ningbo’s total import and export volume surpassed both Tianjin and Liaoning, securing the ninth position nationwide and second among separately planned cities.
What makes Ningbo’s “foreign trade carrier†accelerate so rapidly? Qiu Zhiming, president of Beifa Group—a company that began as a foreign trader—recalls vividly his first visit to the Canton Fair in April 1993. He carried a single box of ballpoint pens packed in a simple wooden crate, hoping to secure orders by standing at the exhibition hall’s stairs. His first foreign trade order was just $20,000. Today, Beifa Group is China’s largest pen manufacturer and ranks third globally. Its pen exports have exceeded $100 million annually.
Like Qiu, countless companies in Ningbo started their journeys through foreign trade.
Ten years ago, farmers from Ninghai rented booths to participate in the Canton Fair. Last year, the 50 self-operated foreign trade exports from the enterprises they owned totaled $162 million, accounting for half of the local foreign trade companies’ total output value. When they returned to the fair last year, they were able to conduct business negotiations with international buyers.
Over the years, "Made in Ningbo" has evolved from "Ningbo Creativity" to "Ningbo Zhizhi," moving away from mere imitation and focusing on increasing product value. The products being exported are becoming lighter and more sophisticated, with higher added value.
Ningbo’s foreign trade exports have earned recognition across various industries. Products such as Dunhuang Brand polyester sewing thread, Beifa Card and Rongcheng ballpoint pens, Great Wall tape measures, Shuanglu batteries, and Haitian injection molding machines are all national export champions. Additionally, Ningbo produces water dispensers, electric irons, hair dryers, heaters, twin-cylinder washing machines, power outlets, and other products that hold the title of national export "single champions."
Currently, at least $5.5 out of every $100 of "Made in China" exports are handled by Ningbo-based businesses.
Foreign trade is increasingly vital to Ningbo’s economy. According to internationally accepted methods, each $100 million in exports can create employment for 10,000 people in China. Based on last year’s $51.96 billion in exports, this equates to over 5.2 million jobs. Now, one in three people employed in Ningbo is directly connected to the foreign trade sector, according to Ding Haibin, a spokesperson from the Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation Bureau.
